Peter Ndlovu

The all time leading goalscorer for Zimbabwe, Peter Ndlovu, started his career at Highlanders FC. He was signed by the English legendary sweeper, Terry Butcher, to play for Coventry City. Although he played major roles for other clubs in England, playing for Coventry City is most recognizable because of the team being an English Premier League.

Peter Ndlovu had a lengthy career with Coventry city, playing a total of 197 games. He did not take long to fit in the team and get a regular staring spot. With time he showed class, scoring some great goals and some important ones too. He became the first player at Anfield to score a hat-trick in 30 years for an away team. Ndlovu scored goal of the season contender, he scored hat-tricks, and he carried the team with his smooth flowing dribbling skills. It is reported that Arsenal and Manchester United were once interested in one of Zimbabwe’s greatest ever players; arguably the best.

In July 1997, he would sign for Birmingham City. He helped them to two successive play off semi-finals in the Nationwide Division One. After making over 100 appearances, he went on a loan to Huddersfield Town, before signing for Sheffield United in February 2001. Making 135 appearances, he scored a hat-trick against Cardiff City, and the winning goal against Leeds United in the 2002 Worthington Cup. Peter Ndlovu had a successful career in the top two flights of the English Football league. He spent 12 seasons, scoring some memorable goals in a total of 90 in 338 appearances.

Peter Ndlovu signed for the South African based team Mamelodi Sundowns, making over 80 appearances. He went on to play for some lower ranked teams before bringing his career to an end.

Over a 15 year period, Ndlovu scored 38 goals for Zimbabwe, playing in 100 international games. He helped Zimbabwe qualify for their first African Nations cup in 2004, as well as their second appearance at the Egypt 2006 tournament. His efforts for Zimbabwe stretched off the field when he helped them by providing funding for their stay in DRC. He has scored some brilliant goals for Zimbabwe in his time, 2 against Burkina Faso, and 3 in the African Nations Cup. His best goals in the Warriors’ colors are arguably the 2 goals in 1993 against Egypt and Angola at the National Sports Stadium, in Harare.
